Ever since we arrived in Darlington we have been trying to find an apartment in New York. We wanted to stay there more than just a few days but hotels in NYC are too expensive for any more than a few days. We found sublet.com and easyrent.com but as they charge a fee and never had exactly what we wanted never contacted anybody through them. We asked many friends to be on the look out for us and many did. We even had an offer of a free place, a very generous offer, but it wasn't in NYC. So we kept searching and hoping. At the end of last week a friend of a friend called saying his friend might have a place. The price was a bit high but after a weekend we negotiated a bit and came to an agreement. We have committed to a month but maybe that will be extended. We're sure the time will pass all too quickly It is a one-bed room apartment, on the fourth and top floor of the building (obviously very short for Manhattan). A friend who has been to see it for us says it is nice. Its on the east side of the island, not too far from the East River, neither far enough north to be called Upper East side or far enough south to be called Lower East side. But we'll be roughly 1.5 miles (2.5 km) from Times Square, Lincoln Center, 5th Avenue museums, and several friends. We leave Darlington on September 28 for three days in London, where we'll help Mick and Dinah celebrate their wedding and retirement. Then it will be off via Air India to New York. |
