Three Visits, 2001

Thai Flag

This was our second visit to Bangkok in a year, as we had flown in and out of Bangkok from China, well Hong Kong, actually, the previous December on our first visit to Thailand. We visited Bangkok on two occasions. First in August on our way from Chiang Mai to eastern Thailand to see the Khmer temples of Phimai, Phnom Rung, and Muang Tam, and second on our way back from Cambodia.

The second visit was perhaps the most notable as we arrived in our hotel just an hour after the first plane hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. We were glued horrified to the TV for the next two hours as we watched first one, then the other tower crumble. Who can forget where they were that day?

But thankfully, there are some good memories too, as Gerry's photographs will attest.

When we got back from Cambodia to Bangkok, we stayed ten days before heading back to England, just enough time to meet up with Dave and Jhap again as they returned home to Ban Sang after a visit in southern Thailand where they first met. With them we continued our tour of Bangkok, visiting the lovely temple Wat ?? and the Royal Boat Museum among other places. We also sampled some of Bangkok's food offerings enjoying a great buffet that offered Thai, Japanese, and western food.
