Bucharest is two cities or even three: The first, or oldest, is the 19th century "Paris of the East" with art nouveau buildings and tree-lined avenues. The second is the dictator Ceausescu's monumental city, meant to make Bucharest the "Paris of the East". The third, is the city of ordinary people trying to make a better life, a mixture of honest entrepreneurs and of hustlers on the make.
