Gracias sits in a beautiful valley, reached by a beautiful drive. 500 years ago the Spanish founder was not so interested in this, as the fact that among so many mountains he had found a place flat enough to settle. His prayer, ending "Gracias a dios", is said to be the origin of the towns name.
