On the way to retirement a rather suprising thing happened to Gerry: he got an offer to be a consultant in China. This turn of events was very unexpected. More than a year earlier, while still in New Jersey, he'd been more-or-less offered a job teaching English in China. He turned down the offer because he/we didn't want to be tied down and because the money offer -- hardly more than housing — was far below an "offer that couldn't be refused." With ZTE it became an offer that wasn't refused.
