Quiz Answer: Monterrey, Mexico

Monterry, Mexico

Monterrey is described as the most American of large Mexican cities. With its near three million population, large "Gran Plaza" (shown) and suburbs with fine homes, it doesn't have the feel of a poor third-world country. Add streets with Pizza Hut, Carl's Jr, and impressive shopping centers, and the appelation makes sense.

St Augustine, Florida is the oldest surving European settlement in the United States and was our first stop in Florida. After what seemed endless winter and endless cold (not really all that bad for Gerry, but a misery for Jan) we found some "not cold" weather in Virginia. But only in Florida did we find some HOT weather.

Gerry first "went" to Mexico when his sister brought him a gift from her trip to Mexico City. He still has the fine leather briefcase that he got about 1955. His first real trip was in 1961 when as a Caltech student he spent a weekend at a Mexican Indian village near Tecate doing volunteer work. Our first and only trip together was in 1978 when we flew in an out of Mexico City, spending a week there.

It is obvious that Mexico has greatly changed since then.
