Quiz Answer: Chalmette, LA

Jan and Gerry with Mississippi riverboat

Chalmette on the Mississippi River;  the taller buildings of  New Orleans are visible from the levee along the river. It is best known, and that is why we went there, the site of the Battle of New Orleans. In 1815 the British wanted to attack and conquer New Orleans so as to control the Mississippi River and its commerce. Gen Andrew Jackson, commanding US forces, rushed from the city to meet the advancing British and defeated them at Chalmette. That assured the country west of the Missiippi would remain in American hands and that Jackson would become famous and later president of the USA.

The Gulf Coast was an entirely unknown country to us. We'd never even been close. Defined on the east by Florida, on the north by Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Lousiana, and on the northwest and west by the Texas coast, we drove along a good part of it. Our stops were in Talahasse, Florida; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Houston, Texas (the last is an honorary member of the coastal community), and San Antonio, Texas (too far from the coast for even honorary membership).
