It is best known, and that is why we went there, the site of the Battle of New Orleans. In 1815 the British wanted to attack and conquer New Orleans so as to control the Mississippi River and its commerce. Gen Andrew Jackson, commanding US forces, rushed from the city to meet the advancing British and defeated them at Chalmette. That assured the country west of the Missiippi would remain in American hands and that Jackson would become famous and later president of the USA.
