The site of the open air museum of Beamishis northwest of Darlington and southeast of Newcastle (upon Tyne.) [Why is Stockton on and Newcastle upon?]. We went to Newcastle to go to the theatre. We bicycled from Darlington (on different days) to Walworth, Piercebridge, Stockton, and Bishop Auckland.

The distance between two vertical lines is about 20 miles. Thanks to Microsoft Encarta for the map.

The map at left shows an area of northeast England from the Tyne River in the north to the Tees in the South. Places of particular interest to our tale are shown by  green circles.

Darlington's center, bottom center of map, is on the river Skerne, just a mile north of its confluence with the Tees.

Some 25 miles upstream on the Tees is High Force, the highest waterfall in England. Downstream is Stockton (on Tees!). Along the coast, south of Teesmouth is Redcar, an old fishing town and summer resort.

-- A plateau is a high form of flattery. -- A midget fortune-teller who escapes from prison is a small medium at large. -- Those who get too big for their britches will be exposed in the end.
