Orange Walk
Teotenango
Route Maps Mexico 2003-04: |
Both Xunantunich and El Pilar were well worth the trip to me. The first is an easy drive of 7 miles followed by an optional one-mile walk (you could take your car over the ferry but I didn't). It was three or four times as big as Cahal Pech and that much more impressive. The second, to El Pilar, was a slow drive of 45 minutes over 10 miles of rough and then rougher road. The site is twice as big as Xunantunich but much less restored: most temples and tombs are still under jungle, with trees growing out of them etc. While I was there there were only two other tourists and I only saw them once in three hours, so I essentially had the place to myself.
