Here's a selection of statues that we found while wandering around Paris. We're sure there is a book about them somewhere, but if there isn't perhaps someone should write it.
We are still not certain, but we believe that the statue of De Gaule was produced b y one of Russia's most infamous sculptors, a man called Tsereteli. In Moscow, he is either lionized or excoriated. He creates enormous sculptures, one of which is on the Moscow River, memorializing Peter the Great's founding of the Russian Navy and his support of voyages of discovery. His works fill a very large self-funded museum in Moscow and the associated restaurant is also decorated with his paintings. The museum contains Tsereteli's statue of Voltaire in which he is surrounded by the books he wrote and the characters he created. Jan liked it, Gerry didn't.
We are fairly certain that this statue of De Gaulle did not exist when last we stayed in Paris in 1999. Are we correct?
Is everything up to date in Paris? Of course. Even the notion of a statue has changed and here we see an example.
