On one of our first days in Paris we drove out to see the Palace at Fontainebleau. It was a favorite of Napoleon; he liked it much better than Versailles and so did we, at least as regards our visits this summer.

Unfortunately the damage done by the revolution and its aftermath, which has largely been repaired at Versailles, has not been repaired at Fontainebleau. But the building is still impressive, and nicer if just for the fact that the crowds are not overwhelming and the nearby village is quaint and still small enough that free on-street parking can be found.
