On our first stay in Tokyo in 1978 we stayed in a small hostel whose primary purpose was accommodating young men come to town to find work. We, and a few other foreigners, found our way there and got an authentic taste of Japanese life. Thirty two years later Shinjuku had become a mini-Manhattan, the young men who had lived in Okubu house had been replaced by a geriatric group, and we were wrinkled, grayed, and almost candidates to accompany them.
