We had just visited Moscow University and walked the 1/2 km north to the Moscow River. There on a bluff above the river, the highest natural point within the city, we learned many people come to get their wedding photograph. So on the spur of the moment we celebrated our anniversary a few months early.

Not much of anything got done while we were in Moscow because of the extremely slow connection we had to put up with.

After being so good about the idea of "planning" we slipped back to our old ways and we ended up in Moscow. As our three months in Paris started to come to an end, we had no real idea where to go next. One day, however, we were at Sciences Po, the famous French university that specializes in economics and political science, to attend a lecture. After the talk, we were browsing the multiple notices pinned to walls and columns and suddenly Jan yelped. She had found a notice offering an apartment to rent for the summer in, of all places, Moscow! Not really believing that anything could come of it, she copied down the email address given and we sent off email that very night.

About two days later we got a call from Frederik from Moscow and we quickly convinced him that we were serious, that the price was right, and that the only condition was that we could get a visa in time and find airplane tickets at a reasonable cost. We undertook to go to the Russian embassy in Paris and Frederik said that he would talk to a friend of his about perhaps getting us an invitation.

It all took a little longer than we would have preferred and as the day for our departure approached we began to think it would all fall through and so went through a bit of nail-biting but in the end Frederik and his friend came through for us, we got our visas, bought tickets on Swiss Air from London to Moscow via Zurich and voila!
