Too bad we didn't get a good photo of this. The site is magnificent. You probably won't find any information about Antioch Ad Cragum in your guide book because it is actually a minor site. We were driving along the Turkish coast on our way to Anamur when we saw a highway sign with this strange name. We wanted to divert right then and there to see what sort of place it was. But we controlled ourselves.

The next day we saw all that we wanted of Anamur and its coastal castle and were going toward Alanya to spend the night when we decided that we had enough time to see Antioch Ad Cragum. But, where was it? We couldn't remember where the turnoff was. So we kept peering at highway signs and finally decided we must have missed it. Of course, then we found it.

The side road started out as a decent road and wound through some typical Turkish villages. But after about 4 miles, we came over a slight rise and looked at the view, looked at one another, and said "Wow!" We could see a rocky peninsula just off the coast and about 200 meters below us. The road sort of dived off the edge of the cliff and snaked its way down down down almost to the sea then across a narrow causeway and up again to the site.

There wasn't much left of the castle, which might have looked a bit like the one on top of Alanya's rocky peak although everything about Antioch was on a much smaller scale. It must have really clung to the Crag, hence its name. By now it was already well past 5 p.m. and so the ticket office was closed, but we didn't mind. Just getting there was enough. But a photo would have been icing on the cake.
