Ayvalik was a way station rather than a destination, although as always we spent at least two nights here. Only a two-hour ride from Bergama (Pergamon) we found a reasonable hotel and were moved in before lunch.

After lunch we walked south through town to the near outskirts. Jan was intrigued by the number of large detached single-family homes for sale along the waterfront. She thought that they would make spectacular winter homes (summer would be too hot) and wondered why they were all being allowed to decay. Perhaps it was the amount of traffic on the main highway. Perhaps there was some political problem in town. Perhaps the owners wanted too much money and buyers were unwilling to invest so much in them. A mystery never to be solved.

The next day Gerry took a long walk to island-pennisula by himself leaving Jan to take it easy.
