San Xavier Bac Mission
was one of the farthest north missions
established in the Arizona - Sonora area by the Spanish.
The church was built to convert the Pima indians.
To make the conversion process easier it was meant to impress.
Amazingly, it still impresses today, even moderns like us who have seen
the best the world has to offer.
For indians who had never seen a plastered building,
let alone one as beautifully decorated as this, it must have been
something far beyond an amazing impression. Well, judge for yourselves.
